Description

The WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to SQL Injection via the 'from' (and sibling 'to'/'first'/'second') shortcode attribute of the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode in versions up to, and including, 8.8 This is due to insufficient escaping on the user-supplied attribute and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query: `shortcode_atts()` returns attacker-supplied shortcode attributes verbatim (WP core performs no sanitization), only `$atts['id']` is re-sanitized afterward, and the raw value is then concatenated into a double-quoted SQL string literal inside `fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone()` (`includes/wsm_db.php:1449`) and executed via `$wpdb->get_results()`. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with Contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a SQL Injection vulnerability in the WP Visitor Statistics plugin for WordPress. It allows authenticated attackers with Contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious SQL queries via shortcode attributes like 'from', 'to', 'first', or 'second'. The plugin fails to properly escape user input and directly concatenates it into SQL queries, enabling attackers to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check for unauthorized SQL queries or suspicious shortcode usage in WordPress logs. Inspect the plugin's includes/wsm_db.php file for the fnGetHourlyReportByDateNameTimeZone function. Look for unexpected database access patterns or errors related to the [wsm_showTrafficStatsList] shortcode.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to access sensitive data stored in your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential content. Attackers might also manipulate data or gain unauthorized access to your site's backend depending on the database permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or exposure of personal data, violating compliance requirements under GDPR, HIPAA, or other privacy regulations. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and mandatory breach notifications if such vulnerabilities are exploited and data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) plugin to the latest version immediately to patch the SQL injection vulnerability. If an update is not available, consider disabling or removing the plugin until a fix is released.
