Blind SQL Injection in VikRentCar WordPress Plugin

Description

The VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to blind SQL Injection via the 'catid' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.4.10 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. A Contributor-level user can store a malicious block via the REST API in a pending post and trigger server-side rendering by previewing that post, bypassing wp_magic_quotes since the attribute is sourced from post_content via parse_blocks rather than a superglobal.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

The VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin for WordPress has a blind SQL Injection vulnerability in versions up to 1.4.10. The flaw exists in the 'catid' parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious SQL queries to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for the VikRentCar Car Rental Management System plugin version 1.4.10 or lower in WordPress. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin directory for version files. Look for unusual SQL query patterns in logs or database access logs.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, attackers could access sensitive data stored in the WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or rental records. The vulnerability requires contributor-level access but can be triggered via the REST API by storing malicious code in a pending post and previewing it.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using this plugin may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if sensitive data is compromised.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the VikRentCar plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, consider disabling the plugin until a patch is released. Restrict contributor-level access to only trusted users and monitor database queries for suspicious activity.
