Description

The GeoDirectory – WP Business Directory Plugin and Classified Listings Directory plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'post_images' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.8.197 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The injected payload does not fire for the attacker directly; it executes in the browser of any Administrator or Editor who opens the pending listing's edit screen, making this a privilege-escalation-capable stored XSS chain triggered through normal editorial workflow.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'post_images' parameter. The injected scripts execute when an Administrator or Editor views the pending listing's edit screen, enabling privilege escalation through normal editorial workflows.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the GeoDirectory WordPress plugin and involves stored XSS via the 'post_images' parameter. Detection requires checking for unauthorized script injections in WordPress plugin files or database entries. Review plugin files like add-listing.min.js and geodirectory-plupload.js for obfuscated or suspicious JavaScript code.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of users, or take over admin accounts. Since the payload executes in the browser of high-privilege users, it could lead to full site compromise. The attack requires only subscriber-level access initially, making it accessible to low-level users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations and potential legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the GeoDirectory plugin to the latest version beyond 2.8.197. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Review user roles with subscriber-level access or higher for unusual activity. Scan WordPress installations for injected scripts in plugin files and database entries.
