Stored XSS in CMB2 WordPress Plugin via Wysiwyg Field

Description

The CMB2 plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'cmb43ex1_grp[0][txt] (wysiwyg field inside group β€” field id controlled by integrator config)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.13.4 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is only exploitable when a site integrator renders the plugin's documented front-end form helper with a wysiwyg field inside a repeatable group on a publicly accessible page.

Executive Summary

The CMB2 WordPress plugin has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 2.13.4. It occurs via the wysiwyg field inside a repeatable group parameter, due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when users access the infected page. Exploitation requires a site integrator to render the plugin's front-end form helper with a wysiwyg field inside a repeatable group on a public page.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the CMB2 plugin versions up to 2.13.4 for pages with front-end forms containing WYSIWYG fields inside repeatable groups. Check for unusual script injections in stored content or page output.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts into your WordPress site. If exploited, these scripts can steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. It compromises website integrity and user trust, potentially leading to data breaches or malware distribution.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability can lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in non-compliance due to potential breaches of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of sensitive data, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the CMB2 plugin to the latest version beyond 2.13.4. Remove any public-facing pages using CMB2 front-end forms with WYSIWYG fields in repeatable groups until updated. Review stored content for injected scripts.
