Description

The LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 7.9.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when the HTML Minify option (O_OPTM_HTML_MIN) is enabled and a companion plugin renders stored comment content into a raw-text context such as a JSON-LD script block on the same page.

Executive Summary

The LiteSpeed Cache plugin for WordPress has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 7.9.1. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'comment' parameter. Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when users access those pages. Exploitation requires the HTML Minify option to be enabled and a companion plugin rendering stored comments in a raw-text context like a JSON-LD script block.

Detection Guidance

Check if the LiteSpeed Cache plugin is installed and its version is up to 7.9.1. Verify if the HTML Minify option (O_OPTM_HTML_MIN) is enabled. Inspect WordPress comment sections for unusual scripts or payloads.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. If exploited, it could lead to unauthorized actions on behalf of users, theft of sensitive data like cookies or session tokens, or defacement of your website. Users visiting infected pages may have their browsers compromised.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing user data and violating GDPR or HIPAA requirements for data protection. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage due to unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the LiteSpeed Cache plugin to the latest version. Disable the HTML Minify option if enabled. Review and remove any suspicious scripts from comments. Monitor for unauthorized changes.
