Description

Semantic MediaWiki from 7.3.0 before 7.3.1 contains a missing authorization vulnerability in the smwtask API module that allows unauthenticated attackers to run queued jobs and force store updates. Attackers can use the public anonymous CSRF token with run-joblist to execute arbitrary job types in unbounded counts, or invoke update on sysop-protected pages, leaking page titles and exhausting resources.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Semantic MediaWiki 7.3.0 allows unauthenticated attackers to run queued jobs and force store updates via the smwtask API module. Attackers can use the public anonymous CSRF token to execute arbitrary jobs or update sysop-protected pages, leading to resource exhaustion and page title leaks.

Detection Guidance

Check Semantic MediaWiki version with: grep -r "$wgVersion" /path/to/wiki/config. If version is 7.3.0 or below, the system is vulnerable. Monitor API logs for unauthorized run-joblist or update requests via smwtask module.

Impact Analysis

This flaw can allow attackers to consume server resources by running unlimited jobs, expose protected page titles, and bypass page protection mechanisms. It may also disrupt service availability and compromise data integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating confidentiality and integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Resource exhaustion may also impact system availability, further breaching compliance standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to version 7.3.1 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict anonymous user permissions by removing 'edit' right for unauthenticated users in MediaWiki configuration.
