Description

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.1.0 before 7.3.1 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to inject scripts through the unescaped default parameter in JsonResultPrinter. Attackers can lure victims to a crafted Special:Ask link with a zero-result query and request_type=special_page, executing JavaScript in the wiki origin to steal sessions or CSRF tokens.

Executive Summary

This is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SemanticMediaWiki versions 3.1.0 through 7.3.0. It occurs due to improper escaping of the default parameter in JsonResultPrinter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts by tricking users into clicking a crafted Special:Ask link with a zero-result query and request_type=special_page parameter. The injected JavaScript executes within the wiki's origin.

Detection Guidance

Check SemanticMediaWiki versions between 3.1.0 and 7.3.0. Inspect Special:Ask links with zero-result queries and request_type=special_page parameters for unsanitized input. Monitor browser console for unexpected script execution during such queries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions or CSRF tokens by executing JavaScript in the victim's browser. This could allow unauthorized actions on the wiki or compromise user accounts. The attack requires user interaction, such as clicking a malicious link.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to SemanticMediaWiki 7.3.1 or later. Apply htmlspecialchars() to the default parameter in JsonResultPrinter. Set Content-Type header to application/json. Disable the remote request feature as a temporary workaround.
