Description

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in Special:Ask, which outputs separator parameters (sep, propsep, valuesep, delim, separator) without HTML escaping in list, category, DSV, and CSV result printers. Unauthenticated attackers can send victims crafted Special:Ask links using request_type=raw or request_type=special_page to execute JavaScript in the wiki's origin, stealing sessions or CSRF tokens.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-116875 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SemanticMediaWiki versions 3.0.0 to 7.3.0. It occurs in Special:Ask when separator parameters like sep, propsep, valuesep, delim, and separator are not HTML-escaped in list, category, DSV, and CSV result printers. Attackers can craft malicious URLs to inject JavaScript into the wiki's origin.

Detection Guidance

Check SemanticMediaWiki versions between 3.0.0 and 7.3.0. Inspect Special:Ask links for separator parameters (sep, propsep, valuesep, delim, separator) in list, category, DSV, or CSV printers. Look for improper HTML escaping in responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into clicking a malicious link, executing JavaScript in your browser. This may steal your session cookies or CSRF tokens, allowing the attacker to impersonate you or perform actions on your behalf without your knowledge.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SemanticMediaWiki to version 7.3.1 or later. Apply htmlspecialchars() escaping to separator parameters in affected printers. Disable request_type=raw and request_type=special_page in Special:Ask if not needed.
