Description

Semantic MediaWiki from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains a cross-site request forgery vulnerability in Special:SMWAdmin because it overwrites the wpEditToken with a freshly generated valid token. Attackers can lure an authenticated smw-admin user to a malicious page that triggers schema setup, entity-disposal, or job actions, causing semantic data loss and resource exhaustion.

Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Semantic MediaWiki versions 3.0.0 to 7.3.0. It affects the Special:SMWAdmin interface where the system overwrites an invalid or missing CSRF token with a freshly generated valid one. This bypasses token validation, allowing attackers to trick authenticated administrators into triggering unintended actions like schema setup, entity disposal, or job execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking Semantic MediaWiki versions and monitoring for unusual administrative actions. Verify if your Semantic MediaWiki version is between 3.0.0 and 7.3.0. Check logs for unexpected schema updates, entity disposal, or job executions in Special:SMWAdmin.

Impact Analysis

Exploitation could lead to semantic data loss, unauthorized schema changes, entity disposal, or resource exhaustion. Attackers can perform destructive administrative actions without proper validation if the victim is an authenticated SMW administrator with relevant features enabled.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to version 7.3.1 or later immediately to patch the vulnerability.
  • Review and restrict access to Special:SMWAdmin to only trusted administrators.
  • Monitor logs for unauthorized administrative actions or unusual data changes.
  • Ensure all administrative actions require valid CSRF tokens and enforce POST methods.
