Description

Semantic MediaWiki from 3.0.0 before 7.3.1 contains a cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows attackers to inject markup by storing malicious semantic property values rendered unescaped in autocomplete suggestions. When another user opens the property-value autocomplete with an empty query, jquery.autocomplete.js concatenates the raw PValueLookup API value into HTML via container.html(), altering the dropdown and potentially executing script.

Executive Summary

This is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Semantic MediaWiki versions 3.0.0 through 7.3.0. Attackers can inject malicious scripts by storing unescaped semantic property values that are rendered in autocomplete suggestions. When a user opens the autocomplete dropdown with an empty query, the raw API response is inserted into HTML without sanitization, allowing script execution in the user's session.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could manipulate the autocomplete dropdown UI or execute arbitrary JavaScript in your browser session. This might lead to session hijacking, data theft, or unauthorized actions on your behalf within the Semantic MediaWiki application.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Semantic MediaWiki to version 7.3.1 or later to address the XSS flaw in autocomplete suggestions.
  • Review and sanitize all stored semantic property values to ensure no malicious markup is present.
  • Implement HTML escaping for API responses used in autocomplete features to prevent unescaped injection.
  • Add regression tests for empty queries with potentially malicious values to detect similar issues.
