Description

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.2.0 before 7.3.1 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows users with the smw-schemaedit right to inject markup through an unescaped property group schema canonical_name. Attackers can save a schema whose canonical_name holds script markup, which GroupFormatter renders unescaped in Special:Browse headings, executing JavaScript in viewers' sessions including administrators.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-116888 is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Semantic MediaWiki versions 3.2.0 to 7.3.0. It allows users with the smw-schemaedit right to inject malicious JavaScript by setting the canonical_name field of a property group schema to a script payload. When rendered in Special:Browse headings, the script executes in viewers' sessions, including administrators.

Detection Guidance

Check for SemanticMediaWiki versions between 3.2.0 and 7.3.0. Inspect Special:Browse pages for unescaped canonical_name fields in property group schemas. Look for injected scripts like <img src=x onerror=alert(document.domain)> in headings.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on behalf of users, or escalate privileges. Since administrators are affected, the entire wiki could be compromised. Data theft or unauthorized modifications are possible risks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if user data is exposed or altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Restrict the smw-schemaedit right to trusted users only. Implement output escaping in the GroupFormatter component to sanitize canonical_name fields. Monitor Special:Browse pages for suspicious schemas.
