Description

SemanticMediaWiki from 3.1.0 before 7.3.1 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows unauthenticated attackers to inject markup through the search parameter of the extended Special:Search profile. Attackers can send visitors crafted URLs using the smw profile with SVG event handlers, which ProfileForm::profile_sheet inserts unescaped into a pre element, executing script in the wiki origin.

Executive Summary

This is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in SemanticMediaWiki versions 3.1.0 to below 7.3.1. It occurs in the extended Special:Search profile when an unauthenticated attacker crafts a URL with malicious markup like SVG event handlers. The search parameter is inserted unescaped into a pre element, allowing script execution in the victim's browser when they visit the malicious URL.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your SemanticMediaWiki instance uses versions 3.1.0 to 7.3.0 and has the extended Special:Search profile enabled. Inspect network traffic for URLs containing the smw profile with SVG event handlers or other HTML-bearing search parameters. Manually test by appending crafted search queries like ?search=<svg onload=alert(1)> to Special:Search?profile=smw.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick users into clicking a malicious link, leading to unauthorized script execution in their browser within the wiki's context. This may result in session hijacking, data theft, or defacement of the wiki page. Users do not need to be authenticated for this attack to succeed.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized disclosure, or integrity violations, requiring breach notifications and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade SemanticMediaWiki to version 7.3.1 or later to patch the XSS vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, disable the extended Special:Search profile or apply the fix from Resource 2 by modifying ProfileForm::profile_sheet to escape query strings. Monitor for suspicious URLs or unusual search queries in logs.
