Executive Summary

REDAXO before 5.21.4 has a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in media, medialist, link, and linklist widgets. Content editors can inject HTML by storing unescaped values, which break out of HTML attributes and execute scripts in administrators' backend sessions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect REDAXO installations for versions 5.21.3 or earlier. Check input widgets (media, medialist, link, linklist) for unescaped values in HTML forms. Look for stored REX_INPUT_MEDIA or REX_INPUT_LINK values that may contain script tags or break out of attribute contexts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can hijack administrator accounts by stealing session cookies or CSRF tokens. This allows unauthorized backend actions, such as modifying content, accessing sensitive data, or further compromising the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Organizations may face compliance penalties if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update REDAXO to version 5.21.4 or later to fix the vulnerability. Restrict content editing permissions to trusted users only. If updating is not possible, disable affected widgets or remove editing access for untrusted users until patched.
