Description

A flaw was found in konflux-ci. An attacker with repository write access can achieve arbitrary code execution within the Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) workflow environment. By injecting shell commands into environment export scripts, the attacker causes manifest synchronization scripts to dynamically evaluate unvalidated script output. Successful exploitation allows the attacker to compromise CI/CD pipelines, steal sensitive authentication tokens and deployment credentials, and gain unauthorized access to production systems.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a critical flaw in konflux-ci, a CI/CD tool. An attacker with repository write access can inject shell commands into environment export scripts. These scripts are then dynamically evaluated by manifest synchronization scripts, leading to arbitrary code execution within the CI/CD workflow. This allows the attacker to compromise pipelines, steal sensitive credentials like authentication tokens and deployment secrets, and gain unauthorized access to production systems.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of vulnerable scripts in your CI/CD pipelines, specifically verify-manifests-in-sync.sh and renovate-manifest-companion.sh. Search for eval usage in these files with commands like grep -r 'eval' /path/to/repo/.github/scripts/. Look for unsafe patterns like eval "$(bash ...)" in environment export scripts.

Monitor for unauthorized changes in repository files, especially environment export scripts. Review pull or merge requests for suspicious shell command injections or unusual script modifications before approval.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability can lead to severe consequences such as stolen authentication tokens, deployment credentials, and unauthorized access to production systems. Attackers can compromise CI/CD pipelines, execute arbitrary code, and potentially pivot to other repositories or systems. The impact includes data breaches, supply chain attacks, and full control over the affected infrastructure.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations due to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potential data breaches, and exposure of protected health information or personal data. Compromised CI/CD pipelines may result in regulatory fines, legal liabilities, and reputational damage for organizations failing to secure their build and deployment environments.

Mitigation Strategies

Replace eval with safer alternatives like source for script execution if only environment variables are exported. Implement strict code review for all PRs/MRs, especially for scripts in .github/scripts/. Validate script output before execution to ensure only expected environment variables are set.

Remove or restrict write access to repositories to untrusted users. Monitor CI/CD pipeline logs for unexpected script executions or credential exposure. Consider disabling vulnerable workflows until patches are applied.
