Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the BloX widgets of Sisense's Cloud BI Platform. The API endpoint /api/dashboards/<id>/widgets/<id> accepts HTML and JavaScript code in the 'desc' and 'text' parameters. When a widget is rendered, the injected code executes in the user's browser, potentially allowing attackers to steal sensitive data or perform unauthorized actions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect API requests to /api/dashboards/<id>/widgets/<id> for suspicious HTML or JavaScript payloads in the 'desc' and 'text' parameters. Monitor browser console logs for unexpected script executions when widgets render.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could compromise the confidentiality of data accessible in the browser context when the widget is rendered. Attackers could steal session cookies, sensitive information, or manipulate displayed content. It may also lead to further attacks like phishing or malware delivery if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations using Sisense may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to the /api/dashboards/<id>/widgets/<id> API endpoint. Sanitize input for 'desc' and 'text' parameters to block HTML/JS content. Update Sisense Cloud BI Platform if a patch becomes available.
