Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Sisense Cloud BI Platform. It occurs when SVG images are processed via the /api/v2/ai/sessions API using the format data:image/svg+xml;base64. Malicious script tags embedded in the SVG are executed when the content is rendered in the assistant window, allowing JavaScript execution and altering displayed content.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XSS vulnerability in SVG processing via the /api/v2/ai/sessions API, monitor network traffic for base64-encoded SVG images containing script tags. Inspect API responses for data:image/svg+xml;base64 URIs with embedded JavaScript. Use tools like Burp Suite or Wireshark to capture and analyze requests to this endpoint.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the context of a user's browser session. This may lead to data theft, session hijacking, or unauthorized content manipulation. Users interacting with compromised SVG content could unknowingly expose sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This XSS vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance penalties, and loss of trust due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict access to the /api/v2/ai/sessions API endpoint to trusted users only. Disable SVG processing or sanitize SVG inputs to remove script tags. Update Sisense Cloud BI Platform to the latest patched version if available. Monitor for unusual activity in the assistant window rendering content.
