Description

REDAXO before 5.21.3 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the backend media pool detail page, where the opener_link parameter is rendered without HTML escaping. Unauthenticated attackers can lure logged-in backend users with media permissions into clicking a crafted link. The injected script can then read the CSRF token and perform actions with the victim's permissions, including code execution via template or module edits when the victim is an administrator.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-117535 is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in REDAXO CMS versions before 5.21.3. It occurs in the backend media pool detail page where the opener_link parameter is rendered without HTML escaping. Attackers can exploit this by tricking a logged-in backend user with media permissions into clicking a crafted link, injecting malicious scripts that run in the backend with the victim's session.

Detection Guidance

Check if your REDAXO instance is running a version before 5.21.3 by inspecting the version file or admin panel. Monitor web server logs for requests containing the opener_link parameter in media pool URLs. Use browser developer tools to inspect network requests for suspicious parameters.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows attackers to steal the CSRF token of a logged-in user, perform actions on their behalf, and execute arbitrary code if the victim is an administrator. This includes modifying templates or modules, potentially leading to full system compromise. The attack requires user interaction but can be carried out remotely.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable REDAXO versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade REDAXO to version 5.21.3 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, implement a web server or reverse proxy rule to strip or block the opener_link query parameter from requests to the media pool detail page.
