Description

REDAXO before 5.21.0 contains a reflected cross-site scripting vulnerability in the backend packages API, where the function parameter is concatenated into an error message rendered without HTML escaping. Attackers can lure an authenticated backend user to a crafted link containing a valid CSRF token, executing JavaScript that performs same-origin actions or reads DOM data.

Executive Summary

REDAXO before version 5.21.0 has a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the backend packages API. The function parameter is directly inserted into an error message without proper HTML escaping, allowing attackers to inject malicious JavaScript code.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for outdated REDAXO versions and monitoring for suspicious backend activity. Inspect the version of REDAXO installed on your system and compare it against version 5.21.0 or later. Look for unusual JavaScript execution in error messages or backend interfaces.

Impact Analysis

An attacker can trick an authenticated backend user into clicking a crafted link containing a valid CSRF token. This could execute arbitrary JavaScript in the user's browser, enabling actions like stealing session tokens, modifying page content, or reading sensitive data from the same origin.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) requirements. Organizations using vulnerable REDAXO versions may face compliance risks due to insufficient protection against XSS attacks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update REDAXO to version 5.21.0 or later to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, restrict access to the backend packages API and implement input validation to prevent XSS attacks. Monitor for unauthorized actions or data exfiltration.
