esp-mcp OS Command Injection via Shell Metacharacters

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-117567, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-27

Last updated on: 2026-10-27

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

esp-mcp through commit 28afddf contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to run arbitrary commands by supplying shell metacharacters in MCP tool parameters. Attackers influencing agent tool calls through prompt injection can inject metacharacters into target, port, project_path, or project_name values passed to asyncio.create_subprocess_shell, executing commands as the MCP server user.

CWE ID Description
CWE-78 The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in esp-mcp. Attackers can inject shell metacharacters into MCP tool parameters like target, port, project_path, or project_name. These values are passed to asyncio.create_subprocess_shell, allowing arbitrary command execution as the MCP server user.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual command execution patterns in logs, especially those involving esp-mcp or MCP tool parameters. Look for shell metacharacters in inputs like target, port, project_path, or project_name. Monitor for unexpected subprocess calls using asyncio.create_subprocess_shell.

Impact Analysis

An attacker exploiting this could run unauthorized commands on the system hosting the MCP server. This may lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration depending on the server's privileges and environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if sensitive data is exposed or altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Update esp-mcp to the latest commit or patch that fixes the OS command injection. Restrict MCP server user permissions to minimize impact. Review and sanitize all inputs passed to MCP tool parameters to prevent shell metacharacter injection.
