Description

mcp-ffmpeg through 1.0.5 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to run shell commands by supplying crafted videoPath or outputDir values to the resize-video, extract-audio and get-video-info tools. Attackers can embed $(), backticks or a closing double quote in an existing file or directory name to break out of the child_process.exec command string and execute commands as the MCP server user.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an OS command injection flaw in mcp-ffmpeg through version 1.0.5. It allows attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands by supplying crafted videoPath or outputDir values to the resize-video, extract-audio, and get-video-info tools. Attackers can use shell metacharacters like $(), backticks, or closing double quotes to break out of the child_process.exec command string and run commands as the MCP server user.

Detection Guidance

Check for unusual processes running on the system using commands like ps aux or top. Look for unexpected network connections with netstat -tuln or ss -tuln. Inspect logs for suspicious FFmpeg or MCP server activity in system logs or application-specific logs.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to execute arbitrary commands on your system with the privileges of the MCP server user. This could lead to data exfiltration, system compromise, or further attacks. Attackers could also manipulate AI assistants using prompt injection to trigger the vulnerable tools with malicious inputs.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized processing, or disclosure of personal or health information, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update mcp-ffmpeg to a patched version if available. If not, disable the resize-video, extract-audio, and get-video-info tools until a fix is applied. Restrict network access to the MCP server and monitor for unusual activity.
