Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in the WP Visitor Statistics (Real Time Traffic) WordPress plugin before version 8.8. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize and escape the 'order' parameter before using it in SQL queries. This allows high-privilege users like administrators to inject malicious SQL code.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the WP Visitor Statistics plugin. If it is below 8.8, the system is vulnerable. Use WordPress admin panel or run SQL query: SELECT * FROM wp_options WHERE option_name LIKE '%visitor_statistics_version%'; to verify version.

Impact Analysis

If you are an administrator using the affected plugin version, an attacker with admin access could exploit this to execute unauthorized SQL commands. This may lead to data theft, unauthorized modifications, or complete database compromise. Users without admin access are not directly vulnerable.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements like GDPR or HIPAA by enabling unauthorized access to sensitive data. Exploitation may result in data breaches, leading to potential legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage for organizations handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the WP Visitor Statistics plugin to version 8.8 or later immediately. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is not immediately available. Ensure only trusted administrators have access to high-privilege roles.
