Description

The Shield Security – Smart Bot Blocking, Brute-Force Login Protection & File Scanning plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'REQUEST_URI' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 22.3.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The hidden 'path' column in ForTraffic.php lacks a client-side render function, so DataTables builds its cell via innerHTML, causing stored HTML in the path value to be parsed into live DOM nodes; a prior partial fix in version 18.5.8 added esc_html() only to the visible 'page' column, leaving the hidden 'path' field unescaped and exploitable through version 22.2.6.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Shield Security WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the REQUEST_URI parameter due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised page.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress plugin versions for Shield Security up to 22.3.2. Inspect ForTraffic.php for unsanitized REQUEST_URI inputs. Look for stored XSS payloads in the hidden path column. Use security plugins to scan for malicious scripts in page paths.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect users to malicious sites. Since it requires no authentication, any visitor to an infected page could be compromised. The vulnerability persists until the plugin is updated or the injected scripts are removed.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. Organizations may face fines or legal action if user data is compromised due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Shield Security plugin to the latest version beyond 22.3.2. Remove any suspicious scripts from the path column in ForTraffic.php. Implement input sanitization for REQUEST_URI parameters. Monitor for unauthorized script injections.
