Description

The Welcart e-Commerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'gid' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.12.5 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload is staged by an unauthenticated visitor who forges the ROBOT PAYMENT browser-return request, storing the malicious gid value in order metadata; the script then fires when an administrator opens that order in the WordPress admin panel.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Welcart e-Commerce WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'gid' parameter due to poor input sanitization. The payload is stored in order metadata when an attacker forges a payment return request, and the script executes when an administrator views the order in the WordPress admin panel.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Welcart e-Commerce plugin versions up to 2.12.5. Inspect order metadata in the database for suspicious 'gid' parameter values containing script tags. Monitor admin panel access logs for unexpected script execution during order viewing.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal sensitive admin session cookies, perform actions on behalf of the admin, or deface the website. Since the payload executes in the admin panel, it could lead to full site compromise, data theft, or unauthorized changes without requiring user interaction beyond viewing the infected order.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection. If exploited, it may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and potential fines under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Welcart e-Commerce plugin to the latest version immediately. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable. Review and sanitize all order metadata entries for malicious payloads. Implement strict input validation for the 'gid' parameter.
