Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Firelight Lightbox WordPress plugin before version 2.3.23. It occurs because the plugin does not properly escape URLs in links opened via its Classic lightbox feature. This allows users with Contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into web pages.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the Firelight Lightbox plugin. If it is below 2.3.23, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress or inspect the plugin files for version details.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could craft a malicious link that, when clicked by other users, executes arbitrary scripts in their browsers. This could lead to theft of session cookies, account takeover, or defacement of the website. Users with Contributor access or higher can exploit this to affect all visitors.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering compliance violations and potential fines.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Firelight Lightbox plugin to version 2.3.23 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin until an update is applied.
