Description

Tabularis before 0.28.0 contains an SQL injection vulnerability in its SQLite driver that allows MCP clients to execute stacked statements by supplying a crafted table_name to the describe_table tool. Attackers, including AI agents steered by untrusted content, can close the quoted PRAGMA argument and append statements to read, modify, or drop SQLite data, bypassing read-only mode and write approval.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Tabularis before 0.28.0 has an SQL injection flaw in its SQLite driver. The describe_table tool improperly handles the table_name parameter, allowing attackers to inject stacked SQL statements. This bypasses read-only mode and write approval, enabling unauthorized data access, modification, or deletion.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your system is running Tabularis versions before 0.28.0. Inspect logs for unusual SQL queries or stacked statements in the describe_table tool. Look for patterns where table_name inputs close PRAGMA arguments and append malicious SQL.

Impact Analysis

If you use Tabularis with an unpatched version, attackers could exploit this to read sensitive data, alter or delete records, or escalate privileges. AI agents processing untrusted content may also be leveraged to trigger this attack.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Tabularis to version 0.28.0 or later to patch the SQL injection flaw. Review and restrict access to the describe_table tool for untrusted users or AI agents. Monitor database activity for suspicious queries or unauthorized data modifications.
