Executive Summary

The BuddyForms WordPress plugin before version 2.10.1 has a flaw where it does not check if a user owns a file before allowing its deletion. This lets unauthenticated attackers permanently delete media files uploaded by other visitors.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of the BuddyForms plugin. If it is between 2.8.8 and 2.10.0, the system is vulnerable. Look for unauthorized deletion of media files in server logs or WordPress media library.

Impact Analysis

If you use the vulnerable BuddyForms plugin, attackers could delete important media files uploaded by you or your site visitors. This could disrupt your website's functionality or cause data loss.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by allowing unauthorized deletion of user-uploaded media files. Under GDPR, unauthorized deletion may violate data integrity and user rights. HIPAA requires protection of health-related media, and unauthorized deletion could breach confidentiality and availability requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the BuddyForms plugin to version 2.10.1 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until an update is applied.
