Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Firelight Lightbox WordPress plugin. It occurs because the plugin does not properly escape image attribute values before processing them in the browser. This allows users with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into content.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Firelight Lightbox WordPress plugin version is below 2.3.24. Inspect plugin files for improperly escaped image attributes in the codebase. Look for user-contributed content containing suspicious scripts in the plugin's output.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with contributor access or higher could inject scripts that execute when other users view or preview the affected content. This could lead to unauthorized actions, data theft, or defacement of the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches or unauthorized access, which may violate GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) requirements. Compliance could be compromised if user data is exposed due to the injected scripts.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Firelight Lightbox plugin to version 2.3.24 or later immediately. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users until the update is applied. Monitor for unusual script execution in user-contributed content.
