Description

The Cool FormKit Lite – Advanced Form Builder for Elementor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the '_elementor_data.form_fields[].custom_id' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.7.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The esc_html() call applied at server emission is bypassed because the HTML fragment-serialization algorithm restores " to a raw double-quote inside text nodes when jQuery .html() extracts the template, allowing the attacker-controlled custom_id to break out of an HTML attribute context within the plugin's own frontend script.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Cool FormKit Lite – Advanced Form Builder for Elementor WordPress plugin. It exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the '_elementor_data.form_fields[].custom_id' parameter. Authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher can inject malicious scripts into pages, which execute when users access those pages. The issue bypasses server-side sanitization because HTML fragment serialization restores raw quotes, allowing the attacker to break out of HTML attribute contexts.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress installations for the Cool FormKit Lite plugin versions up to 2.7.9. Inspect form templates for malicious custom_id parameters in Elementor form fields. Review server logs for unusual script injections in rendered pages.

Impact Analysis

If you use the vulnerable plugin, attackers could inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site. These scripts could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or perform actions on behalf of users. Since it requires contributor-level access, the risk is limited to users with editing permissions or higher. However, if exploited, it could compromise visitor data and site integrity.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, exposing user data stored on the site. For GDPR, it may result in unauthorized access to personal data, triggering breach notification requirements. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information if the site handles such data. Both regulations require safeguards against unauthorized access, and this flaw undermines those protections.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Cool FormKit Lite plugin to the latest patched version. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to users. Sanitize all user inputs in form fields, especially custom_id parameters. Monitor affected pages for unexpected script execution.
