Remote Code Execution in Apache MINA 3.0 Codec

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-118636, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-31

Last updated on: 2026-10-31

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

**UNSUPPORTED WHEN ASSIGNED**Β  JavaNativeMessageDecoder in the MINA 3.0 codec module calls ObjectInputStream.readObject() on frame bytes with no class filter, so an application that puts it in front of an untrusted peer is open to gadget-chain RCE. As the 3.0.0 branch is inactive, we do not plan to release a version that fixes this issue. Users are recommended to use the latest Apache MINA 2.2.X branch.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-118636 is a critical vulnerability in Apache MINA versions 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2. It involves unsafe deserialization in the JavaNativeMessageDecoder component, which calls ObjectInputStream.readObject() without a class filter. This allows gadget-chain remote code execution (RCE) if the decoder is exposed to untrusted peers.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking if Apache MINA 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2 is installed and if JavaNativeMessageDecoder is exposed to untrusted peers. Inspect application dependencies for MINA 3.x versions. Check network configurations to identify if the vulnerable component is reachable by untrusted sources.

Impact Analysis

If you use Apache MINA 3.0.0 through 3.0.0-M2 and expose the JavaNativeMessageDecoder to untrusted peers, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code remotely on your system. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or further network infiltration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to remote code execution (RCE) if exploited, potentially exposing sensitive data processed by applications using Apache MINA 3.0.0. This may violate GDPR's data protection requirements for secure processing and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exploited in healthcare systems.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade to the latest Apache MINA 2.2.X branch, as the 3.0.0 branch is inactive and no fixes will be released. If using MINA 3.x is mandatory, ensure JavaNativeMessageDecoder is not exposed to untrusted peers and implement strict input validation.
