Description

The JoomSport – for Sports: Team & League, Football, Hockey & more plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to generic SQL Injection via the 'pgroup' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.7.14 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. A Contributor-level user can trigger the vulnerable code path by authoring a post containing the [jsMatchPlayerList] shortcode with a malicious pgroup value and previewing it, as WordPress allows shortcode execution during post preview for the post's author.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL Injection flaw in the JoomSport WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to inject malicious SQL queries via the 'pgroup' parameter. The issue occurs due to insufficient input escaping and lack of proper SQL query preparation. Attackers can exploit this by creating a post with a malicious shortcode, enabling them to extract sensitive database information.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check for the presence of the JoomSport plugin version 5.7.14 or lower. Inspect WordPress posts containing the [jsMatchPlayerList] shortcode with a malicious pgroup parameter. Review database access logs for unusual SQL queries or unauthorized data extraction attempts.

Impact Analysis

If you use the JoomSport plugin, an attacker with contributor access could steal sensitive data from your WordPress database, such as user credentials, personal information, or other confidential records. This could lead to further attacks, data breaches, or unauthorized access to your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if it results in unauthorized access to personal or health data. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the JoomSport plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict contributor-level access to untrusted users. Monitor for suspicious activity in database queries and WordPress post previews. Consider disabling shortcode execution during post preview if not required.
