Description

minimatch is a minimal matching utility for converting glob expressions into JavaScript RegExp objects. Prior to 11.0.1, src/index.ts implements firstPhasePreProcess() so that, at optimizationLevel 2 or higher, it repeatedly expands attacker-controlled **/.. pattern segments inside a fixpoint loop, allowing generated globParts entries to be processed and expanded again. secondPhasePreProcess() then compares the expanded entries pairwise, so a short malicious glob can cause excessive CPU and memory consumption during pattern compilation. This issue is fixed in version 11.0.1.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the minimatch library, which converts glob expressions into JavaScript RegExp objects. The issue occurs in the firstPhasePreProcess function, where attacker-controlled **/.. pattern segments are repeatedly expanded in a loop at optimization level 2 or higher. This leads to excessive CPU and memory usage during pattern compilation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the version of minimatch in use. If your system uses minimatch version prior to 11.0.1, it is vulnerable. Run 'npm list minimatch' or 'npm list -g minimatch' to check the installed version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to cause denial-of-service by consuming excessive system resources during glob pattern processing. This could slow down or crash applications using vulnerable versions of minimatch.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade minimatch to version 11.0.1 or later immediately. Use 'npm install minimatch@latest' or update your package.json to specify version 11.0.1 or higher.
