Description

A flaw was found in the UMA resource registration endpoint of the keycloak-services component, which provides the core logic for Keycloak's authorization and identity services. The issue occurs when remote resource management is enabled, allowing an authenticated user with specific permissions to update resources they do not own by providing a target resource ID in a request. This can lead to unauthorized modification of resource configurations, such as names, URIs, and scopes.

Executive Summary

This is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) flaw in Keycloak's UMA resource registration endpoint. When remote resource management is enabled, an authenticated user with the uma_protection role can modify resources they do not own by providing a target resource ID. The system fails to verify ownership, allowing unauthorized changes to resource configurations like names, URIs, and scopes.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor Keycloak logs for unauthorized POST requests to /realms/{realm}/authz/protection/resource_set with uma_protection role. Check for requests modifying resource configurations without proper ownership verification. Use network traffic analysis tools like tcpdump or Wireshark to inspect HTTP requests targeting Keycloak endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to alter resource settings they shouldn't access, potentially disrupting services or misconfiguring permissions. Since it requires valid credentials and the uma_protection role, the risk is limited to authorized users with specific privileges.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable remote resource management if not required. Restrict uma_protection role assignments to trusted users only. Apply patches or updates from Red Hat once available. Monitor resource modification logs for suspicious activity. Consider temporarily disabling the affected endpoint if immediate mitigation is needed.
