Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Elementor WordPress plugin allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level access or higher to expose sensitive information. It specifically targets the 'keys_conversion_map' parameter to extract private post content and plaintext passwords from drafts, pending, or future posts, including those by administrators.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor WordPress sites using Elementor versions up to 4.2.3 for unauthorized access to sensitive post data. Check server logs for unusual requests to the 'keys_conversion_map' parameter or attempts to access private posts. Use Wordfence or similar security plugins to scan for known indicators of compromise.

Impact Analysis

If you use Elementor on WordPress, attackers could access private drafts, future posts, or password-protected content. This may lead to data leaks, unauthorized content exposure, or compromised post security, even for posts by high-privilege users.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers to expose sensitive post content and plaintext passwords of private or draft posts. This could lead to unauthorized access to personal or confidential data, potentially violating GDPR (if personal data is exposed) and HIPAA (if protected health information is involved).

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Elementor Website Builder plugin to the latest version beyond 4.2.3 to patch the vulnerability. If immediate update is not possible, restrict contributor-level and higher user roles to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive parameters like 'keys_conversion_map'.
