Description

The Content Egg plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to unauthorized modification of data due to a missing per-post capability check on the ajaxUpdateProducts() function in versions up to, and including, 12.0.0. The handler verifies a static nonce ('contentegg_metabox') and the generic 'edit_posts' capability, but trusts the attacker-supplied $_POST['post_id'] verbatim and never calls current_user_can('edit_post', $post_id) β€” the per-object check that its sibling save_post handler saveMeta() correctly performs. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with contributor-level access and above, to modify Content Egg product data (_cegg_data_*) and update-timestamp post meta on arbitrary posts, including those owned by administrators.

Executive Summary

The Content Egg WordPress plugin has a vulnerability where an attacker with contributor-level access or higher can modify product data on any post, including admin posts. This happens because the plugin checks a static nonce and a generic capability but fails to verify if the user has permission to edit the specific post being targeted.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could change product details, prices, or timestamps on your WordPress posts without your knowledge. This could mislead visitors, damage your site's credibility, or disrupt affiliate marketing efforts if product data is altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Content Egg plugin to the latest version beyond 12.0.0 to ensure the missing capability check is patched.

Review posts for unauthorized modifications to _cegg_data_* and update-timestamp meta fields, especially on high-privilege accounts.
