Description

The Content Egg – Affiliate Product Importer & Price Comparison plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 12.0.0 This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with author-level access and above, to create posts attributed to another user's account β€” typically an administrator β€” by supplying an admin-owned preset_id, causing wp_insert_post to record the administrator as post_author. This includes the ability to create published posts when the attacker already holds publish_posts capability for the preset's post type, resulting in administrator-attributed published content created by a lower-privileged user.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authorization bypass in the Content Egg WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with author-level access or higher to create posts under another user's account, typically an administrator, by manipulating a preset_id parameter. This can lead to administrator-attributed content being created by lower-privileged users.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Content Egg plugin for unauthorized posts or changes in post authorship. Review user roles and capabilities for unexpected elevated permissions. Look for posts created by admin users but authored by lower-privileged accounts.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized users to publish content under an administrator's name. This could lead to misinformation, reputational damage, or unauthorized content being associated with trusted accounts. It primarily affects WordPress sites using the vulnerable plugin versions.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Content Egg plugin to the latest version if available. Remove or disable the plugin if no update is provided. Audit all posts for unauthorized changes and review user roles for suspicious activity. Consider revoking author-level access temporarily.
