Description

The ThirstyAffiliates – Affiliate Links, Link Branding, Link Tracking & Marketing Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.12.1 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable on block themes (such as Twenty Twenty-Five) where the Comment Content block causes comment HTML to flow through render_block, triggering the plugin's transformer. Additionally, a successful attack requires the attacker to have had one prior comment approved, after which subsequent crafted comments are auto-approved and rendered publicly.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the ThirstyAffiliates WordPress plugin up to version 3.12.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The scripts execute when users view infected pages, but only on block themes like Twenty Twenty-Five where comments are rendered through the plugin's transformer. Attackers need one approved comment first, after which subsequent crafted comments are auto-approved and publicly visible.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using ThirstyAffiliates plugin versions up to 3.12.1. Inspect comments for injected scripts in pages using block themes like Twenty Twenty-Five. Review auto-approved comments for suspicious content.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow attackers to steal user sessions, deface websites, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. Users with admin access could have their accounts compromised, leading to further site takeover. The impact depends on the site's traffic and user privileges, but it primarily risks data theft and user trust erosion.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by exposing user data through script injection. GDPR requires protecting personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. A successful attack may result in unauthorized data access, triggering regulatory penalties, fines, or legal liabilities for affected organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update ThirstyAffiliates plugin to the latest version. Disable auto-approval of comments. Review and remove suspicious comments. Implement strict input sanitization for comments.
