Description

The Smart Post – Post Grid, Post Carousel, Post Slider Gutenberg Blocks for Blog & News plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'display_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.9 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the victim page to contain an Author Filter block alongside a grid or live-filter block, and execution is triggered by a visitor clicking the attacker's author entry in the dropdown β€” a standard filter interaction requiring no elevated privileges from the victim.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'display_name' parameter. The flaw exists due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in versions up to 4.0.9. When exploited, it enables arbitrary code execution on pages containing specific blocks when users interact with attacker-controlled author filters.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of the Smart Post plugin in WordPress installations. Inspect the 'display_name' parameter in pages containing Author Filter blocks alongside grid or live-filter blocks. Look for unusual script injections in page content.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. Visitors clicking infected author filters would unknowingly trigger script execution. The attack requires minimal privileges but depends on specific plugin block configurations being present on your site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to inject malicious scripts into WordPress pages. Such attacks could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or exfiltration, which may violate GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data privacy) compliance requirements by exposing sensitive user information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Smart Post plugin to the latest version beyond 4.0.9. If an update is unavailable, consider disabling the plugin temporarily. Implement strict input validation and output escaping for user-generated content.
