Description

The User Submitted Posts – Enable Users to Submit Posts from the Front End plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'user-submitted-content' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 20260916 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. On a default installation the submitted post is held as Pending and requires admin approval before the payload is reachable by other visitors; however, if the plugin's "publish immediately" option is enabled, no approval step exists and the stored payload becomes live without any moderator interaction.

Executive Summary

This WordPress plugin vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'user-submitted-content' parameter. The scripts are stored in posts and execute when users access those pages. By default, posts are held for admin approval, but if the 'publish immediately' option is enabled, the malicious payload becomes active without moderation.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the 'User Submitted Posts' plugin for pending posts containing suspicious scripts in the 'user-submitted-content' parameter. Inspect page source for injected JavaScript in submitted posts.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could steal user sessions, redirect visitors to malicious sites, or deface your website. If the 'publish immediately' setting is enabled, the attack happens automatically without any admin review. Even with pending approval, attackers could target specific users or pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements. For HIPAA, it may compromise protected health information if user-submitted content includes sensitive data. Both standards require protecting against such exploits to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Update the 'User Submitted Posts' plugin to the latest version if available.
  • Disable the plugin if no update is available or remove it entirely.
  • Review pending posts for malicious scripts and delete any suspicious entries.
  • Disable the 'publish immediately' option in plugin settings to require admin approval.
