Description

The FunnelKit Automations – Email Marketing Automation and CRM for WordPress & WooCommerce plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to time-based SQL Injection via the 'bwfan_cart_id' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.8.5.2 due to insufficient escaping on the user supplied parameter and lack of sufficient preparation on the existing SQL query. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to append additional SQL queries into already existing queries that can be used to extract sensitive information from the database. Exploitation is a two-step persisted attack: an unauthenticated attacker submits a crafted bwfan_cart_id value during a guest Store API checkout (requiring only a publicly obtainable WooCommerce cart nonce), and the injection fires when a scheduled Action Scheduler job later reloads the stored meta upon order status transition out of pending, failed, or cancelled.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This is a time-based SQL injection vulnerability in the FunnelKit Automations WordPress plugin up to version 3.8.5.2. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization in the 'bwfan_cart_id' parameter, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious SQL queries. Exploitation requires only a WooCommerce cart nonce and involves a two-step process where the attacker submits a crafted value during checkout, which later executes when a scheduled job processes the order.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor WordPress sites using the FunnelKit Automations plugin versions up to 3.8.5.2 for unusual SQL queries or errors. Check server logs for requests containing 'bwfan_cart_id' with suspicious payloads. Use tools like WP-CLI to inspect plugin versions and database queries for anomalies.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data from the WordPress database, including user credentials, personal information, or other confidential data stored by the plugin. Since it requires minimal prerequisites (only a public cart nonce), the risk is significant for any site using the vulnerable plugin version.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection principles and potentially HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. A successful exploit may result in data breaches, triggering mandatory breach notifications and regulatory penalties under these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the FunnelKit Automations plugin to the latest version. Disable the plugin if an update is unavailable. Review and restrict database access permissions. Monitor for unauthorized data access or modifications. Consider using a web application firewall to block SQL injection attempts.
