Description

Immich is a high-performance self-hosted photo and video management solution. Prior to 3.3.0, the unauthenticated machine-learning /predict endpoint in machine-learning/immich_ml/main.py accepted an options object and passed its values into model construction in machine-learning/immich_ml/models/base.py without restricting security-sensitive parameters. An attacker with network access to the service could set cache_dir to an arbitrary writable path, causing model downloads to write there and causing clear_cache() to pass that path to shutil.rmtree() after selected model-loading failures. Depending on filesystem permissions and the selected path, this could modify files in mounted data locations or recursively delete an attacker-selected directory. The model-name allowlist prevents this issue from becoming arbitrary-model deserialization or code execution. This issue is fixed in version 3.3.0.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.
CWE-73 The product allows user input to control or influence paths or file names that are used in filesystem operations.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Immich, a self-hosted photo and video management tool. An unauthenticated endpoint /predict allowed attackers to set arbitrary paths for model downloads by manipulating an options object. This could lead to file modifications or directory deletion if the path is writable or improperly secured.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Immich instance is running a version prior to 3.3.0 by inspecting the version in the web interface or logs. Verify if the /predict endpoint is exposed to unauthenticated users by reviewing network access logs or firewall rules.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to modify files in mounted data locations or delete directories by specifying a malicious path. This may cause data loss or system instability, depending on filesystem permissions and the selected target path.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Immich to version 3.3.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict network access to the /predict endpoint to trusted sources only.
