Description

SQLite before 3.54.0 contains a use-after-free vulnerability in the R-Tree extension that allows attackers to make applications use freed heap memory by manipulating the %_node shadow table. Attackers can supply a database declaring %_node WITHOUT ROWID or with a RAISE(IGNORE) trigger so nodeWrite() hashes nodes as 0, crashing the process after node splits.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This is a use-after-free vulnerability in SQLite's R-Tree extension (versions before 3.54.0). Attackers manipulate the %_node shadow table by declaring it WITHOUT ROWID or adding a RAISE(IGNORE) trigger. This causes nodeWrite() to hash nodes as 0, leading applications to use freed heap memory. The result is potential crashes after node splits.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the SQLite version in use. Run 'sqlite3 --version' to verify if your version is before 3.54.0. If so, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, inspect databases using the R-Tree extension for manipulated shadow tables like %_node WITHOUT ROWID or RAISE(IGNORE) triggers.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability may cause application crashes due to memory corruption. Attackers could exploit it to execute arbitrary code or trigger denial-of-service conditions in applications using SQLite with R-Tree extensions.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade SQLite to version 3.54.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, disable the R-Tree extension in your SQLite configuration to prevent exploitation. Review and sanitize any SQLite databases using the R-Tree extension for signs of manipulation.
