Description

CakePHP through 5.4.3 contains an sql injection vulnerability that allows attackers to inject SQL by supplying unvalidated frame offsets and directions to WindowExpression::range() and frame(). Attackers can pass crafted values through applications forwarding user input into the OVER clause to execute SQL with the database connection's privileges.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

CakePHP versions up to 5.4.3 have an SQL injection flaw in the WindowExpression::range() and frame() methods. Attackers can exploit this by providing unvalidated frame offsets and directions through user input passed into the OVER clause of SQL queries. This allows them to execute arbitrary SQL commands with the database connection's privileges.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SQL injection vulnerability in CakePHP requires checking for unvalidated user input passed to WindowExpression::range() or frame() methods. Review application logs for suspicious SQL queries containing OVER clauses with crafted offsets or directions. Inspect application code for direct user input forwarding into these methods.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to read, modify, or delete sensitive data in your database. They could also execute administrative operations or take control of the database server. If your application processes user input in SQL queries, it is at risk of exploitation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability can lead to unauthorized data access or breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade CakePHP to version 5.4.4 or later to patch the vulnerability. If upgrading is not possible, implement strict input validation for all parameters passed to WindowExpression::range() and frame(). Use parameterized queries or ORM methods instead of raw SQL. Review and sanitize all user-supplied data before processing.
