Description

CakePHP through 5.4.3 contains an sql injection vulnerability that allows attackers to inject SQL by supplying unvalidated collation values to StringExpression and IdentifierExpression. Attackers controlling a collation name passed to the constructor or setCollation() can append SQL after the unquoted COLLATE clause, affecting every database driver within the connection's privileges.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

CakePHP through version 5.4.3 has an SQL injection vulnerability. Attackers can inject malicious SQL code by providing unvalidated collation values to StringExpression and IdentifierExpression. If an attacker controls the collation name passed to the constructor or setCollation(), they can append SQL after the unquoted COLLATE clause, potentially affecting all database drivers within the connection's privileges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your CakePHP application uses versions up to 5.4.3. Inspect code for StringExpression or IdentifierExpression usage with user-controlled collation values. Look for patterns where collation is set without validation. Use static analysis tools to scan for unvalidated collation parameters in these classes.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary SQL commands on the database. This could lead to unauthorized data access, data manipulation, or complete database compromise. Attackers might steal, modify, or delete sensitive information, depending on the database permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to unauthorized data exposure or manipulation.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade CakePHP to version 5.4.4 or later to address the SQL injection vulnerability. Review all code using StringExpression and IdentifierExpression to ensure collation values are properly validated before passing them to constructors or setCollation().
