Description

OPNsense core before 26.7.8 contains a configuration line injection vulnerability that allows authenticated users with wireless-edit privilege to inject directives by embedding CR/LF characters in WPA fields. Attackers can place newlines in wpa.identity, wpa.passphrase, or RADIUS shared secrets to append arbitrary wpa_supplicant or hostapd directives loaded by root-run daemons.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in OPNsense core before 26.7.8 allows authenticated users with wireless-edit privileges to inject malicious configuration lines by inserting CR/LF characters into WPA fields like wpa.identity, wpa.passphrase, or RADIUS shared secrets. Attackers can append arbitrary directives to wpa_supplicant or hostapd configurations, which are then executed by root-run daemons.

Detection Guidance

Check OPNsense logs for unusual wpa_supplicant or hostapd directives in wireless configurations. Inspect WPA fields (wpa.identity, wpa.passphrase, RADIUS secrets) for embedded newline characters or unexpected entries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with wireless-edit privileges could escalate privileges, execute arbitrary commands as root, or disrupt network services by manipulating wireless configurations. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or denial of service on the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OPNsense core to version 26.7.8 or later. Remove CR/LF characters from WPA fields and RADIUS secrets. Restrict wireless-edit privilege to trusted users only.
