Executive Summary

OpenCart versions up to 4.1.0.4 have a business logic flaw where logged-in customers can place orders without paying. Attackers exploit this by using reward points to select Free Checkout, then clearing the points after saving the order. This tricks the system into processing the order as free despite the initial point application.

Impact Analysis

If you use OpenCart, attackers could exploit this to obtain products without payment, leading to financial losses. Merchants may face chargebacks or inventory shortages. Customers might also experience disrupted service if the store closes due to fraud.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by enabling unauthorized transactions, potentially violating data integrity or financial record-keeping requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. Merchants may fail to meet audit or transaction logging standards if fraudulent orders go unnoticed.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenCart to version 4.1.0.4 or later to address the business logic flaw. Review order processing workflows to ensure payment is enforced even when reward points are used. Monitor order logs for suspicious Free Checkout submissions with zero payment.
