Description

phpMyAdmin through 5.2.3 contains an authentication bypass vulnerability in CustomServer::parseAndValidateAssertionResponse() that never verifies WebAuthn assertion signatures against stored public keys. Attackers holding a victim's MySQL credentials can POST a crafted webauthn_request_response with matching challenge, origin, and rpIdHash to bypass the second factor and gain database privileges.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an authentication bypass in phpMyAdmin versions through 5.2.3. It occurs in the CustomServer::parseAndValidateAssertionResponse() function, which fails to verify WebAuthn assertion signatures against stored public keys. Attackers with a victim's MySQL credentials can send a crafted webauthn_request_response with matching challenge, origin, and rpIdHash to bypass second-factor authentication and gain unauthorized database access.

Impact Analysis

If you use phpMyAdmin with WebAuthn authentication enabled, an attacker who obtains your MySQL credentials could bypass the second authentication factor and gain full access to your database. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized modifications, or complete database compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected phpMyAdmin versions may face compliance violations, data breach notifications, and potential fines if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade phpMyAdmin to a version later than 5.2.3 to address the authentication bypass vulnerability in WebAuthn assertion handling.
