Description

phpMyAdmin through 5.2.3 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows database users with CREATE privilege to inject script via unescaped table names in DesignerHistory.display(). Attackers can create a table whose name contains HTML markup that executes in another user's session when they add a condition on it in Designer query mode.

Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in phpMyAdmin versions up to 5.2.3. It allows authenticated users with CREATE privileges to inject malicious HTML markup into table names. When another user interacts with the Designer interface and adds a condition on the affected table, the injected script executes in their session.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect phpMyAdmin installations for version 5.2.3 or earlier. Check for tables with names containing HTML markup or special characters in the Designer history. Review the history.js file in the designer module for improper escaping of table names in the display() function.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform CSRF attacks, or manipulate user preferences. The impact is limited to users who interact with the Designer interface on databases containing the malicious table. It does not allow unauthenticated access or remote code execution.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches if session cookies or other credentials are stolen, potentially exposing personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade phpMyAdmin to a version later than 5.2.3 where the issue is patched. Ensure proper escaping of table names in the DesignerHistory.display() function. Restrict CREATE privileges to trusted database users to prevent malicious table creation.
