Executive Summary

Parse Server versions from 9.7.0 up to but not including 9.10.5-alpha.7 have an information disclosure flaw. When protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt is false, users with create or update permissions can read values written by beforeSave triggers under protected fields using dot notation keys in the same request.

Impact Analysis

Attackers with valid permissions could access sensitive data stored in protected fields if the server uses beforeSave triggers and protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt is false. This could lead to unauthorized data exposure within the application.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could result in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's requirements for safeguarding protected health information. Compliance may be compromised if the exposed data includes regulated information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Parse Server to version 9.10.5-alpha.7 or later to address the information disclosure vulnerability. Ensure protectedFieldsSaveResponseExempt is set to true to prevent clients from reading protected field values via dot notation keys.
