Executive Summary

This vulnerability in changelog.com allows unauthenticated attackers to access unpublished content through preview routes in specific controllers. By exploiting missing authorization checks, attackers can read draft posts, unsent newsletters, and declined news items by enumerating hashid post IDs, sequential newsletter slugs, or integer news IDs.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized access to preview routes in PostController, NewsIssueController, and NewsItemController. Test endpoints with sequential or predictable IDs (e.g., hashid post IDs, newsletter slugs, integer news IDs) to see if unpublished content is exposed.

Impact Analysis

If you use changelog.com, attackers could access sensitive unpublished content such as draft posts or internal newsletters before they are officially published. This could lead to data leaks, reputational damage, or unauthorized disclosure of proprietary information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate data protection regulations like GDPR or HIPAA by exposing unpublished or sensitive content prematurely. Unauthorized access to personal or confidential data may result in compliance breaches, legal penalties, or loss of trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the patch from commit 7b35e829 or later. Restrict access to preview endpoints by implementing authentication. Audit logs for suspicious enumeration attempts against these routes.
