Description

The Debug Log Manager – Conveniently Monitor and Inspect Errors plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'message (and pageUrl)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 2.5.2 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Successful exploitation requires that the site administrator has debug logging enabled with JS error logging active, and that the attacker can obtain the publicly emitted dlmVars.jsErrorLogging nonce β€” which is broadcast on every frontend page β€” to pass the nonce check on the unauthenticated endpoint.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Debug Log Manager WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'message' and 'pageUrl' parameters due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. The injected scripts execute when users access the compromised page.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the Debug Log Manager plugin up to version 2.5.2 for suspicious scripts in the 'message' or 'pageUrl' parameters. Check server logs for unauthorized JavaScript error logging requests or unexpected dlmVars.jsErrorLogging nonce exposure.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, deface your website, or redirect visitors to malicious sites. It requires debug logging with JS error logging enabled and the attacker obtaining a specific nonce value broadcast on frontend pages.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Debug Log Manager plugin to the latest version beyond 2.5.2. Disable JavaScript error logging in debug settings if enabled. Review frontend pages for injected scripts and remove any unauthorized code. Rotate the dlmVars.jsErrorLogging nonce if compromised.
